Nebi Akasha Mosque

The Nebi Akasha Mosque is a currently inactive mosque located in western Jerusalem. It was built in the 12th-century under the Ayyubid dynasty to honor the graves of Saladin's soldiers who were buried at the site. Additions were made to the mosque by the Mamluks in the 13th-century. Local tradition asserts that Akasha, a supposed companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad was buried there in the 7th-century.[1]

As a result of the Palestinian Arab exodus from western Jerusalem during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, the mosque was abandoned. Today, it is located in the middle of an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhood and is used as municipal storage facility.[1] On 14 December 2011, the mosque was set on fire and vandalized by right-wing Israelis in a price tag attack.[2]
